The Kids Sports Network
Parent
Orientation Program was created to help youth sports leagues
orient and educate their parents on a variety of important issues.
The program addresses the three R’s for parents. It explains their
rights as youth sports parents, the league rules parents need
to follow and their responsibilities as parents of young athletes.
It also contains tips for being a good youth sports parent and
a pledge of good conduct for each parent to sign.
KSN encourages youth leagues to allow their coaches to conduct
the program at a meeting of team parents; however it can also
be implemented in larger group settings conducted by league
administrators.
The program consists of a 12-page pamphlet that is given to
each set of parents and an 11-minute video designed to be shown
to all parents assembled at a meeting of team parents. The video
is hosted by Jim and Janet Sundberg, co-authors of the book
"How
to Win at Sports Parenting." Jim was a catcher in the major
leagues for 16-years and Janet is a behavioral specialist and
lecturer.
Instructions on how to conduct a parent meeting and to implement
the Parent Orientation Program accompanies the materials. Also
included in the materials is a Good Sports Pledge for Parents
and a test to Rate Yourself as a Youth Sports Parent.
The Parent Orientation
Program can also be purchased from KSN. Three kit sizes
are available for youth associations. A Team Kit can also
be
purchased by individual coaches. To order, print out the Parent
Orientation brochure and fax or mail your order.
